The world premiere of Love & Other Drugs kicked off at the AFI Fest 2010 in Hollywood, California recently which a handful of celebs attended including the stars of the film, Anne Hathaway & Jake Gyllenhaal. Seeing the premiere made me flash back to the exclusive screening of the film last month where one sassy woman stood out the most: Yaya DeCosta.
Yaya is an actress and fashion model who touched the glamorous tinsel town a few years ago but really hit it big in the TV series, Ugly Betty. But did you know that before this urban New Yorker of Brazilian, Native American, West African & Irish heritage ruled the silver screens, she appeared in Cycle 3 of America’s Next Top Model where she ended up inches away from winning the title?
That didn’t stop the exotic beauty though as she slowly but steadily rose to stardom. In Ugly Betty she played the role of Nico Slater, a rebellious wild child. Off-screen Yaya is the epitome of serene glamour & natural beauty. If I had to pick a lady who’s extremely comfortable in her own skin so to say, I would choose her. Even when it comes to her hair, the 27 year old actress stays away from chemicals, extensions and all that jazz and shows off her curly locks in their natural form which was how it was during the Love & Other Drugs screening in East Hampton, New York.
Paired with a sheer snake-print jumpsuit, black peep-toe pumps & an array of silver bangles Yaya’s look was unique & certainly eye-catching. But what made it even more extraordinary were her delicate pairs of dangling feather earrings. I smell a signature style here as Yaya has always completed her look with feathery bling in previous occasions. I say pairs because she donned not one but two pairs of feather earrings, the first one in black and the second one in green, which hung stylishly from her second shot on the top of her ears.
Amongst all the flashy bling out there, designers are slowly returning to earthy styles in line with the global Green awareness and feather jewelry is one trend that’s catching on fast amongst those who want to go for a natural but alluring look. You can even incorporate feathers into necklaces and bracelets as well. If you really want to spice up an evening look, try peacock feathers for a vibrant and dramatic effect.
In an interview, Yaya said “Whether people are wearing their hair naturally because it's trendy or it means something to them doesn't really matter because the point is that it's the new acceptance of self. It's about loving yourself for who you are, and then going out and exploring other things." Well said girlfriend! With that in mind go ahead and strut those feathers with style!
